Did you know that the San Francisco Airport (SFO) maintains a noise abatement program (Fly Quiet) that works to bridge the communications between the communities surrounding SFO?
The overall goal of the Fly Quiet Program is to influence airlines to operate as quietly as possible in the San Francisco Bay Area.
A successful Fly Quiet Program is expected to reduce both single event and total noise levels around the airport as per Fly Quiet
At the aforementioned site, you can also view, in near real-time, flights including the speed, altitude, and much more.
There are noise monitors installed in various parts of the community that collect data about noise generated by planes flying into and out of SFO. In fact, a few years back your FSIA President, John Sebastinelli, was instrumental in getting the noise meter, in Fairmont, replaced and updated by SFO.
Although the Fly Quiet program works to “influence airlines to operate as quietly as possible” the program can’t promote change without your complaints.
Often times, while in my yard with my kids, I will see a very low flying plane that makes so much noise I can’t hear my kids. The planes are so low that if my eyes were any better I could probably see the person sitting in seat 4A. I am exaggerating a bit but those of you who live in the Fairmont West area, you know what I mean.
